Guinea-Bissau’s army has seized power just days after national elections, arresting President Embaló and suspending all state institutions. The military claims it acted to block an alleged plot to manipulate results involving politicians and a drug lord. Gunfire erupted near the presidential palace, media and borders were shut, and election officials detained. Civil groups call it a staged coup, as West Africa faces repeated takeovers since 2020.
