RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) — Richmond celebrated community and culture this weekend with two major events taking place just blocks apart.

The Richmond Pride Festival returned to the Millstone Entertainment District on Saturday, hosting thousands of people.

A few blocks away, the Madison County Juneteenth festival took place at Dillingham Park.

Organizers said both events were focused on highlighting different stories while sharing a common goal of bringing the Richmond community together.

“We decided to celebrate today because I have so many friends and family that are apart of the community, and I have seen how they are treated poorly by other citizens of the community. And I want them to know they have my full support,” said Tiffany Browning, a Pride festival attendee.

Pride festival creates welcoming space

Organizers said the Pride event was designed to create a welcoming space where people can celebrate who they are.

“You know there’s a lot going on in the world, and so I think this just highlights love in our community to connect one another,” said Dylan Bogard, Richmond Pride Board chair.

The festival featured live entertainment, vendors, food and activities throughout the day in downtown Richmond.

Juneteenth festival honors freedom and culture

The Madison County Juneteenth festival commemorated the end of slavery in the United States and recognized the contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

“This is here to spread the word of Juneteenth, and also celebrate the emancipation of slaves who didn’t get the word of the emancipation proclamation,” said David Townsend, an event board member.

Families enjoyed live performances, activities for children, speakers, vendors, food trucks and music throughout the afternoon.

“It’s very important to us as the Black community, as well as the white community, to bring awareness and celebrate our independence. We enjoy celebrating our heritage, and what’s important to us, and this is something that is very important to us,” said Shanalya Chenult, a Juneteenth festival attendee.
