Press Kagame reacts following a discussion with South African President on Eastern DRC conflict

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame on Wednesday evening took to social media site X to allege that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who had reached out to the East African leader earlier this week to mediate the conflict in DRC, was spreading “lies” about Kigali’s role in the fighting in Goma.

Kagame said he had spoken with Ramaphosa twice this week.

“What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks and even lies,” the Rwandan president said.

Kagame went on to issue several clarifications on a statement released by Ramaphosa on X where he referred to Rwanda’s army as a militia.

“If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take the role of a peacemaker or mediator,” Kagame said, adding, “And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.”

Kagame’s post was in response to Ramaphosa’s on X. The South African president was announcing the deaths of 13 South African soldiers while serving as part of the South African Development Community mission focused on bringing peace to eastern DRC.

Ramaphosa said South Africa welcomed a United Nations Security Council directive which calls for a ceasefire and “reversal of territorial expansion in eastern DRC by the M23,” adding that “the territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected.”

The disagreements between the two leaders developed after DRC President Felix Tshisekedi addressed the nation and said Kinshasa will recover the lost territory from the M23 rebels.

Tshisekedi reiterated his government’s allegations that Rwanda is backing M23’s aggression in his nation and warned that “the presence of thousands of Rwandan soldiers on our soil … (is leading) to an escalation with unpredictable consequences.”

Kagame maintains that Rwanda is not backing the M23.

In the UN security council meeting February 21th , 15/15 members all just voted against kagame’s action in RDCongo and all in favor of RDF get out congo as soon as possible, it’s a victory for the peace makers and shame for Kagame. now it’s on Kagame to comply or face the consequences , history reminds us how it ended with Tylor.
