The BEST of Black manhood in education, government, business, the military, law enforcement and the justice system, medicine, nonprofits, the faith community, media and everyday life will be honored August 3 at the Italian Community Center during the Milwaukee Community Journal’s 49th anniversary event. ‘Men Building Men’ is the theme for this year.
Twenty-two men…men who help to build up other Black men, as well as the Black community where they live, work, worship, and raise families.
Black Men will be in the spotlight on this day. Not only willthey be in the spotlight, they willshine as beacons of light for—what we hope will be—the manyyoung and impressionable Blackboys who will help bear witnessto the greatness and success of the adult males sitting on the dais before them in the Italian Community Center’s ballroom;illuminating the proactive andprotective demeanor thatstrengthens our community…Black Milwaukee!
Proceeds from the event willagain go to benefitting the Terence N. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund (see ad with this year’s scholarship recipients on page three in THIS WEEK’S EDITION). Mayor Cavalier Johnson is a past recipient of the scholarship.
Fourteen current scholars will recieve $2,000 each so they can add to their scholastic sucesses that are guaranteed throughout their academic careers.
Unlike other scholarships, these scholars continue to receive $2,000 annually until they graduate from college. You help them reduce debt and affirm our commitment to build men who—themselves—build men.
The keynote speaker for this year’s anniversary brunch is in keeping with it’s theme: ‘Men Building Men,’ Pastor Tony Lowden (see photo on the front page above the paper’s nameplate, or ‘masthead’), president/CEO of Jabez Ministries in Byron, Georgia.
Pastor Lowden was the pastor of the late former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his late wife, First Lady Roslyn.
Pastor Lowden is known as a transformative advocate for restoring lives and building strong communities by building strong men and women.
Pastor Lowden knows about being disadvantaged and the wonder of faith, fellowship, and favor. Most of all, Pastor Lowden knows how to “walk with kings, yet keep the common touch.”
