With the counting of ballots complete, political parties in South Africa are now hunting for allies. This is because the African National Congress, which has been in majority since the end of apartheid in 1994, failed to reach the 50% mark. The ANC received around 40% of the vote. The ANC could now either negotiate a coalition government or persuade other parties to back Ramaphosa’s re-election in parliament to allow him to form a minority administration. Will Ramaphosa and the ANC go to Jacob Zuma’s MK party for coalition talks? Julius Malema’s EFF says it is open to talks only if ANC is ready for a compromise.
