Musk, Ramaphosa in Talks About Starlink’s Expansion in South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is seeking investments from Elon Musk’s companies, including Tesla and Starlink, in exchange for relaxing local Black ownership requirements for Starlink’s satellite network. Musk’s growing political influence, including his role as a leading adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, is helping to break down resistance to Starlink’s global expansion, with many governments now seeking to attract his business. Starlink has already conquered over 100 countries and territories, offering high-speed internet services and outpacing rivals, with Musk’s company using its technological and business advantages to pressure regulators to bend or scrap laws that restrict its operations. Ondiro Oganga reports on Bloomberg Television.

  1. As a South African I don't know what this lady knows about South Africa but hopefully Starlink will be affordable for South Africans. The problem is the big mobile networks have their hands in the government's pants. It's a corrupt country and Lord only knows how the negotiations will go with a president who had dollars stuffed in his couch. The ANC doesn't want progress and access to information because the emotional manipulation by misinformation of the public and news from gossip is what keeps the electorate ignorant enough to keep voting for the corrupt. Hopefully we can get a reliable fast internet service in South Africa. In this age access to information is a human right.

  2. You have a non-South African correspondent in South Africa: check
The correspondent cannot pronounce the South African President's name correct: check
    Make yourself a joke: check

  3. Elon knows – and should rememeber – that Ramaphosa's ANC is the No. 1 Enemy of Free Market, Business and Economic Growth. But if he can do even one significant thing to break the Communist / Socialialist Straightjacket under which Business has to operate in South Africa, it will be hugely appreciated – and Millions of South Africans will benefit (instead of the massive downward spiral currently in place).

  4. We do not want that stalink. We have laws if you do not accept our laws then do no come. Other bussines follow the laws. We have our local internet companies. which is way cheaper compared to that expensive sta link

  5. Makes no sense since no South African is involved in the interview? As far as I know the Starlink system will not be introduced without BEE. And that is not good for South Africa. Musk dances to his own tune anyways….

  6. Great if Musk can operate in RSA , unhindered by the racist AA & BEE Laws .

This Musk precedent will make way for all RSA businesses to employ on the basis of skill , experience and the appropriate dose of enthusiasm for the job , as opposed to employment on the basis of hue , but no experience or enthusiasm to add value to the employers market segment.

  7. Ramaphosa should give major advantages to citizens because if starlink comes then disrupt mtn which has much workforces wjilst starlink operate straight from usa

  8. Well in south africa we pay more that any country for internet and our networks here are rapping the average south African so can't wait for star link and some one has to bring better rates so with the banks it advertising 23 percent but we really pay 55 percent back commission mongers all of them

  9. Biggest reason why Musk doens't want Starlink or Telsa in South Africa is becuase of tge BEEE structure. Whish is good thing becuase look what it did to most major companies in SA. You are smart Musk.

  10. Musk must not do this. He is wasting his money. The communist unions will first get hold of it and throttle it. This government needs more money to steal. I think they have run out of money. My advise is to stay away Elon. You dont need this BS in your life believe me.

  11. Musk says it's because he's not black. I hope he feels what he does to people he kicks off x for telling truth with English words. Such thin skin he has.
