California Fires: Historic Black community devastated by Eaton Fire

A major part of the burn area of Altadena wiped out homes owned for decades by African Americans. That’s because redlining made nearby cities like Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge practically off-limits.

California fires have wreaked havoc on Los Angeles as crews battled several massive blazes, including the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hurst Fire, Kenneth Fire, Sunset Fire, Lidia Fire and Woodley Fire. Areas impacted included the Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Pasadena, Sylmar, Encino, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Hollywood Hills, West Hills, Acton and parts of Ventura County.

  1. Her opening words were horrible. What did she exactly say. Or was her phone or mic beeping more important-took her focus. Seems like she didn't want to say they all moved there because of RACISM.

  2. Another form from raiding and looting black communities to redlining to domain to gentrification and now arson. Their history constantly repeats itself. When will we finally say, fuck this shit?

  3. When you allow the state to call you “palace aides” to your face, aka palace servants / slaves. You are never going to be a member of the country club. Why would you think that Gov. Newsom the man in the palace would have protected you from wild fires it’s not like they are something new? The pollution from the fires is a million times worse than plastic straws. I guess middle class slaves/aides/servants are replaceable by undocumented that will work twice as hard and do not know the system. Burn the slaves out to hold them down when they became too affluent? It’s the inside knowledge of the people in the palace.

  4. This fire started in Eaton Canyon. The red line policy is criminal. That being said, I saw a video of a woman yelling for her husband to come look — it was the fire. There was a power line right next to the fire. If that power line started the fire, officials should answer to why the power was not shut off. The county and the electric company are responsible to help rebuild – subsidize the insurance cost for rebuilding.

  5. We tragically lost our home to the fire. As a Black family with over 50 years in Altadena, this community has always been our foundation. We've started a GoFundMe and would be incredibly grateful for any support—whether it's sharing our story or contributing.

  6. Praying all of those Black families are able to rebuild to preserve the community.
Though celebrities aren’t obligated, I pray more step up to help especially those from Cali.

  7. FYI historical White homes burned down too. It’s called historical homes burnt down. A lot of Black people these days seem to want to be ethnocentric. Spreading hate amongst the community. Does no good.

  8. SMH I remember meeting Mr. Mitchell ( one of the men died because he stayed to take care of his disabled son) we meet in an educational program and I feel so bad for his family and other bother Black families still tryin to fight for a place to sleep and love. SMH Black Americans need reparations.

  9. You will mention that Eaton and Altadena are black but you wont mention that Pacific Palisades is heavily Jewish….Why is that? You wont talk about the Jewish history of Pacific Palisades that came there after WW2, you wont even mention the word "Jew, or Jewish" when referring to Palisades…..WHY IS THAT?

  10. The only good news to come from these fires is there won't be fires there for a couple of years and the arsonist did newsom's job in the worst way .
If only there was common sense in that state no one would be watching this many fires burning year after year.

  11. They did this on purpose they already cleared out the black people from pasadena and the only way to get them out of altadena was to burn it.Look throughout history and you will see the pattern
