The BBC challenges M23 leader on Rwanda and human rights – BBC Africa

Since the start of 2025, the rebel group has been advancing through eastern DRC, seizing control of key towns like Goma and Bukavu.
The BBC’s Orla Guerin asked Corneille Nangaa, head of the alliance which includes M23, about evidence of backing from Rwanda and human rights abuses.

  1. Most replies are the numerical information from the rwandwese people paid for backing up lies on all evidences published globally but the fact is true that the M23 and AFC is Paul Kagame and himatutsi empire invasion on the Drc. These people being killing for 3 decades in the Drc 12 millions dead and many misplaced. The world organisations are unfair to let the congolese people sufferred but they closed eyes, remains silent. 😢

  2. This terrorist of Nanga deserves a long time prison sentence for killing Innocent people also kidnapping and rapping of women .
Lol whitout being ashamed l he's looking for the evidence to prove the presence the Rwanda military in Goma while ONU has proven everything 😢

  3. King Leopold from Belgium divided the Tutsi and the Hutu decades ago and turned them against each other when he invaded Congo/DRC. This is a result from his dictatorship 😭😔😔😔 The M23 need to be ARRESTED and Paul Kagame needs to be arrested and charged.

  4. In all truths this Nangaa was the president of the Congolese electoral Commission and the one who proclaimed mr. His excellency Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo as the 5th president of DR Congo I’m 2018 December. Let’s question our ignorance as this Nangaa is now a rebel by betraying an entire nation as a former electoral president now wanna be a president wow: this dude Nangaa is a real clown no question. If there is a nation in this world to fool is the Democratic Republic of Congo. Why am I making such a statement is because it one special and unique place in the world where people do whatever they want and the rest of the world doesn’t care……I will say that why the 2 cities in the east provinces of Congo bordering with Rwanda and Uganda are occupied by the Rwandese Army RDF!!!!

  5. What happened to the BBC that I grew up listening to and learning from?? Now it has become a propaganda medium on the subject of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, the former King Leopold's African empire? I know it is a waste of time, but let me try anyway. The real issue in eastern Congo, was caused by the Conference of Berlin in 1884-85, and subsequent scramble for Africa, where Europeans colonial clubs were tearing Africa apart like dogs fighting over a piece of meat. They drew lines creating borders to suit their greedy needs, without considering the devastating effect of this madness. How are Africans going to solve this crisis that Europeans created? One family in Cameroon, has one part of their land in Cameroon and another in Nigeria, because when colonial borders were created, they never checked to see whose land they were messing with. Please inform your journalists to bear this in mind each time they visit eastern Congo. This portion of eastern Congo , the Province of Kivu, is home to Banyarwanda ethnic group, one of Congo's five largest ethnic groups. Hiow did they end up in what is now Congo, that once belonged to King Leopold of Saxe Cobourg in Germany and the King of a newly created Kingdom of Belgium? As a result of the scramble for Africa, Rwanda lost three or four times the land of its size to English in Uganda, Belgians in the Congo and Germans in Tanganyika. You will find ancient native runyarwanda speakers in these three countries, and this is what the crisis in eastern Congo is all about. Banyarwanda of eastern Congo are Congolese and all they want is to be treated and respected as other Congolese instead of considering them alien Rwandans.
    Thank you,

  6. BBC sounds biased. Why do they ignore M23 has been there for years. Don't they know there are thousands of Congolese in refugee camps in Rwanda, Uganda, TZ, even in US. Why put words in his mouth that Rwanda is backing M23. They are fighting for their rights.

  7. The enemies are westerners. They are the ones looking for minerals in Congo. Westerners like USA, France and UK have been in Congo for more than three centuries and never fixed the issue. These rebels are fighting for their rights as citizens of Congo. Congolese are to blame.

  8. The tensions between President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) mainly revolve around security issues, rebel groups, and regional stability. Here’s a breakdown of their key disagreements:

    1. The M23 Rebel Group Conflict

    DRC's Position (Tshisekedi's View):

Accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has taken over parts of eastern DRC.

Claims Rwanda provides weapons, training, and logistical support to M23 fighters.

Believes Rwanda wants to exploit DRC’s natural resources.

    Rwanda's Position (Kagame's View):

Denies supporting M23 and instead blames the DRC for collaborating with the FDLR (a rebel group made up of remnants of those responsible for the 1994 Rwandan genocide).

Argues that the DRC has failed to control rebel groups within its borders, leading to regional instability.

Claims that Rwanda is being used as a scapegoat for DRC’s internal political problems.

    2. Regional & International Involvement

    Tshisekedi's Approach:

Seeks support from the international community, including the UN, the U.S., and France.

Strengthened ties with Kenya, Angola, and the East African Community (EAC) for military and diplomatic support.

    Kagame's Approach:

Criticizes Western nations for bias and for not addressing the security threats Rwanda faces from DRC-based rebel groups.

Prefers regional solutions but remains firm on Rwanda’s right to defend itself.

    3. Who is Telling the Truth?

Independent reports, including those from the United Nations and Human Rights Watch, suggest that Rwanda has provided support to M23. However, there’s also evidence that the DRC has tolerated and collaborated with FDLR, which has attacked Rwandan territory.

The truth is likely somewhere in between—both countries have been involved in supporting different armed groups to serve their own interests.
