Kenya is being used as a major route for smuggled gold coming from conflict-hit African nations, according to a new report by SwissAid. The gold, mainly from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and possibly Sudan and Ethiopia, is being routed through Kenya before ending up in places like Dubai. While Kenya officially reported just 672 kilograms of gold exports in 2023, SwissAid estimates the real number is more than two tonnes each year. Most of this gold is not declared when it leaves Kenya but shows up in import data from other countries. The report suggests that this illegal trade is helping criminal networks and costing African nations millions in lost revenue.
