Burkina Faso’s military leader and interim President Ibrahim Traore has once again said that a sinister plot against him has been foiled. Traore has repeatedly claimed to be the target of conspiracies and assassination attempts. In the latest development, the Burkina Faso junta leader stated that foreign powers are pressuring one member of the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) to betray the others. Traore says foreign powers were pushing hard to fracture the newly formed regional bloc of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali. Earlier, Traore also claimed several attempts to overthrow him. In April this year, the Junta said it had foiled a plot to overthrow Traore, which was allegedly orchestrated by current and former soldiers in Ivory Coast. Also in April, Traore had claimed to survive a conspiracy involving at least 119 plotters allegedly linked to former junta leader Damiba.

• “Democracy promotion” often turns into backing leaders who protect U.S. interests, not necessarily those who serve African people.
• Diplomacy is sometimes used to block African unity or pan-African institutions that threaten Western power.
Real motive: Maintain political control and influence decisions.
3. Defense – “Military in Disguise”
• The U.S. has a growing military footprint in Africa (e.g., AFRICOM, drone bases, and special forces operations).
• The excuse is often “counterterrorism,” but critics argue this militarizes the continent and creates proxy wars.
• It gives America access to strategic locations and resource routes, especially near oil, uranium, and cobalt reserves.
Real motive: Secure American interests under the banner of “security.”
So Why Is It Called a “Scam”?
Because:
• It sounds humanitarian (help, peace, partnership)
• But it often delivers control, dependency, and blocks true African sovereignty
• It creates illusion of partnership, while continuing post-colonial dominance

What Can Be Done?
Africa must:
• Redefine development through self-reliance and intra-African trade
• Control its own diplomacy and speak with one voice
• Build its own defense and intelligence networks (a Pan-African force)
