Caught in the crossfire: The victims of Cape Town’s gang warfare | BBC News

Over the course of just three months last year, police reported 263 gang murders on South Africa’s Western Cape – 79 of those were children, killed by gunshot wounds or stabbings.

Cape Town is one of the wealthiest cities in Africa but also one of the most unequal and divided.

It has become South Africa’s gang capital, with more than a hundred gangs fighting for control of the lucrative drugs trade.

This Africa Eye investigation gives rare access to one of the most volatile communities in the country: Hanover Park.

  1. Typical european media – always focusing on death, and completely ignore everything else on a GIANT continent.
Never a positive story to report when the subjects are NOT european!

  2. Our government blames it on crime, but does absolutely nothing. We have a useless Police minister, like all other corrupt ministers. They have no idea what it does to tourism and industryinvestments… Shame on the ANC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. It’s almost like centuries of European white terrorism murder and slavery and segregation destroyed half the world….

Ironic that the BBC is reporting on this considering England is one of the biggest reasons Africa struggles so hard to survive 😢😢

  4. da party has been governing cape town seens the 2000s but look at the bad conditions people are still living in.
They are living nicely in the suburbs but they do not care about people in the townships. They could not change townships and stop the crimes and poverty

  5. Oh my sweetheart, I wish I could come and give you a hug. I'm so sorry our law has failed you so badly. Our government honestly needs to change. This is not fair. nobody asks for this kind of life. 😢😢😢😢
