Higher tariffs lead to either increased prices for consumers or reduced profit margins for businessesâneither outcome is ideal for our economy both long term and short term, anybody that says this is not a big deal in a country with a hemorrhaging economy is completely ignorant or a liar. We've just invested R8.9 million in new machinery with the goal of exporting products to the U.S. â only to now face a crippling 30% tariff. This decision directly impacts businesses like mine that were actively working to bring foreign income into South Africa and stimulate job creation.
Thanks to our incompetent leadership, the ANC, and a president with no grasp of economic realities, our margins have plummeted. Weâve gone from 45% profit to just 15%. That means for every R1 million we make, we only see R150,000. To see a R5 million profit, weâll now need to do over R100 million in turnover. This makes our export strategy â the very one we based our capital investment on â almost financially unviable.
We canât compete with China because theyâre already producing at ultra-low costs. BRICS, for all the hype, has offered no real trade benefit. The U.S. was one of the only markets where we had a competitive edge because of our currency â and now even that is gone.
This decision doesnât just hurt one company. It kills opportunities. This single project couldâve created over 50 permanent jobs. Now, weâre scrambling to figure out how to make this business model work and recoup our investment.
South African businesses are being punished for trying to grow, scale, and contribute to the economy â while the government continues to act like growth and job creation are someone elseâs responsibility.
