After a contentious vote in which key opposition voices were barred, demonstrators in Tanzania clashed with security forces, prompting alleged cross-border tear-gas deployments into Kenya. The unrest has disrupted trade, spurred internet outages and curfews, and drawn strong criticism from rights groups over alleged human-rights abuses. Opposition claims that the protests have killed around 700 people, while official records state only two have died.
