For weeks, the US has used the “war on drugs” to justify its escalating military presence – its largest in the Caribbean since the 1989 invasion of Panama.
Officials in Washington have said a “new phase” in the administration’s pressure campaign against Maduro was about to begin.
And Venezuela’s authoritarian leader responded by urging followers to prepare to defend “every inch” of the South American country.
This is the latest stage in an intensifying campaign that has been going on for months.
It has included strikes on fast boats in the Caribbean, which has resulted in 83 deaths that the UN has called extrajudicial executions, and Maduro being accused of running the “Cartel of the Suns” drug-trafficking organisation, which the US designated a terrorist group this week.
But the Guardian Latin America correspondent, Tom Phillips, says that while Trump’s administration has largely used the “war on drugs” to justify its presence in the region, the evidence does not quite support this.

If the U.S. wanted to stop the fentanyl coming into the country, they’d go after the labs in Mexico. With today’s technology there’s no doubt they know where they are. They could easily use drones or special forces to take out those labs. Ask yourselves why they do not do this?!
The answer is obvious: they are intentionally enabling the fentanyl crisis here in the U.S. it’s another way to cull the herd and keep the people down, debilitated and divided.
If you have any doubt that this is true, just research the history of the CIA and drug trafficking.

It's about cutting off the oil so that it is made difficult for China to expand influence in the region.
Coltan is being exported on the black market by Maduro's son (he runs the division). Once it hits the border, it follows many of the same routes for drug trafficking to hit ports. We don't actually refine much dark crude in the U.S. which is what Venezuela produces. It's about rare earth minerals much more valuable than oil for the tech bros to try to catch up with China and launch our own social scoring system. This is actually out there to learn about. It's not complicated or hidden.
