Peoria seminar addresses dementia awareness in African American community

PEORIA (25News Now) -A free weekend seminar brought families, caregivers and health professionals together to address dementia awareness and brain health in the African American community.

The annual “Release the Silence” event aimed to close what organizers described as a critical gap in access to information, resources and support, particularly as health disparities can affect outcomes.

“I want attendees to have a better understanding of the signs and symptoms of the disease and what they should look for to get their loved one to receive a diagnosis,” said Delia Jervier, executive director of the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Attendees learned about the latest research on brain health and practical steps to reduce dementia risk, including prioritizing sleep, staying socially connected, managing stress and controlling conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.

The program also addressed caregivers, with guidance on burnout, setting boundaries, and finding community help.

Tables and materials pointed individuals toward community resources, including caregiver support, information on dementia and memory concerns, and options for continued learning.

Organizers said the goal is to keep the conversation going so brain health becomes something families discuss early, not only after a crisis.
