BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) -New York State is looking to make reparations to its Black citizens for the slavery endured by their ancestors, with workshops held in Binghamton on April 28th.
The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, or CCRR is on a statewide tour holding workshops to discuss potential solutions. Last night, two sessions were held at Trinity AME Zion Church. In 2023, Governor Hochul signed legislation establishing the CCRR, which consists of a 9-member body that is tasked with making recommendations to the legislature on what can be done to repair damages to the Black community.
Public Education Coordinator Hayden Frederick-Clarke says whether you are a supporter or skeptic, it is important to be educated.
Public Education Coordinator Hayden Frederick-Clarke says, “We hope that tonight people walk away with a better understanding, not only of the details and nature of slavery in New York State, but also the lingering consequences of that institution. And then finally have some opinion that they would like to share, so we’re not trying to norm the audience per say, we are trying to encourage people to get their voice out there.”
Frederick-Clarke says the workshops are preliminary feelers to the public hearings that will be held at a later date. For more information about the hearings, click HERE.
