CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – 100 Black Men of Central Virginia awarded $59,000 in scholarships Saturday morning to high school seniors across Central Virginia.
The nonprofit works to uplift young men and their learning while eliminating educational gaps. Saturday’s scholarships are part of that mission and a celebration of students and their accomplishments.
“We’re just here to uplift them and to show our appreciation for their continued engagement, as well as to show what it looks like when you have people who pour into our youth and engage with them and to aid in their success,” said Ty’Leik Chambers, recording secretary for the 100 Black Men of Central Virginia.
Scholarships were given to 54 students to support their future steps in higher education. Awards included $1,000 for recipients and a $5,000 scholarship in memory of Elijah Witt, a UVA student and mentor in the nonprofit.
“They have helped me in numerous ways, with finding scholarship opportunities, writing letters of rec, being there as just someone to talk to that understands who you are as a Black man, and kind of uses their wisdom to help navigate your life,” said Maxwell Keys, a scholarship recipient.
Keys said as a member of 100 Black Men of Central Virginia since the 5th grade, the award speaks to the journey and lasting support that stems from the mentorship within the nonprofit.
“Knowing that there are people over here that I could come to and talk to, you know, people who are invested in my future and all that I could bring to the table in the future is really great to have,” said Guy Muguma, a scholarship recipient.
