As communities recognize Juneteenth on June 19, it is also an opportunity to support Black entrepreneurs who help strengthen local economies, create jobs, and build trusted businesses in our neighborhoods.
Supporting Black-owned businesses does not have to be complicated. Small, intentional actions can make a meaningful difference year-round. When consumers choose to support businesses that positively impact their communities, everyone benefits.
Be intentional about where you shop
Create better purchasing habits by thinking more carefully about where your money goes. Take time to learn about the stores, restaurants, and brands you support and how they engage with their communities.
Researching businesses before making purchases can help you make informed decisions while supporting companies that value trust and community involvement.
Shop locally
Look for Black-owned businesses in your area and make a point to visit them regularly. Explore local shops, restaurants, service providers, farmers markets, and vendors.
Shopping locally helps small businesses grow while keeping money circulating within the community.
Leave customer reviews
Online reviews can have a major impact on a business’s success. Many consumers visit online business profiles, including those on BBB.org, before deciding where to shop.
If you have a positive experience, take a few minutes to leave a review. Honest feedback helps businesses build strong reputations and encourages other consumers to support them as well.
Share businesses online
Social media is one of the most powerful ways consumers discover new businesses. Sharing posts, commenting on updates, or recommending businesses online can help introduce more people to Black-owned businesses in your community.
Many businesses use social media to connect directly with customers and build long-term relationships. Even a simple share or recommendation can help increase visibility.
Buy gift cards
Gift cards are a practical way to support businesses while introducing friends and family to new places to shop, dine, or receive services.
People are often more willing to try a new business when they receive a gift card, and a positive experience may turn them into repeat customers.
Attend community events
Look for local events featuring Black entrepreneurs, artists, and business owners. Community festivals, educational programs, networking events, and markets create opportunities to support businesses while learning more about the people behind them.
You can also support these events through sponsorships, volunteer work, or simply attending and spreading the word.
Support professional services
Support goes beyond retail purchases. Consider hiring Black-owned businesses for professional services such as accounting, design, catering, real estate, legal services, or consulting.
Dining at Black-owned restaurants or using local catering services for meetings and events is another simple way to support entrepreneurs in your community.
Support organizations that help entrepreneurs
Many nonprofit organizations provide mentorship, education, funding opportunities, and business support for underserved entrepreneurs.
Volunteering, donating, or participating in these organizations can help create opportunities for future business owners. Visit Give.org to research organizations supporting Black entrepreneurs and communities.
Make support a year-round habit
Juneteenth is an important time to celebrate and recognize Black-owned businesses, but consistent support throughout the year creates a greater long-term impact.
Every purchase, review, recommendation, and community connection helps strengthen local businesses and contributes to a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone.
