6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Irmo honored Black culture, provided community resources

The African American Historical Society of Irmo (AAHSI) hosted its 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Moore Park on June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when it was announced in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people were free, over two years after then-President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The federal holiday provides an opportunity to celebrate Black culture and reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality.

Macedonia Baptist Church at 1150 Lake Murray Blvd. collected canned goods for its local food drive, and AAHSI welcomed attendees at the entrance with free accessories and informational flyers.

Richland County Library brought a pop-up with games and books for children as well as a selection from their Seed Library with seasonal flowers and produce. Other tents from local volunteer organizations in the Health and Wellness Zone had information on insurance, childcare services and other community resources.

Local vendors sold homemade desserts, clothes, accessories and skincare products to attendees along with a myriad of food trucks offering soul food, barbecue and pizza.

The celebration wrapped up with a live concert from Sumter native and former The Voice contestant Tia DuRant, also known as the Princess of Soul. She encouraged the crowd of over 200 to dance and sing with her as she performed covers of hip-hop, jazz and R&B.
