TULSA, Okla. — A stage production exploring the history of Black Wall Street returned to Tulsa this weekend.
On Saturday, people gathered inside Central Highschool to experience “Deep Greenwood Ignited: The Hidden Truth of Black Wall Street.”
This production traces the rise of Greenwood from its founding through the 1912 Tulsa Race Massacre, before ending with the rebuilding of the historic district.
The playwright, Mia Walter, told FOX23 about the amount of research she put in for this play.
“I didn’t take it lightly. I said, you know, this is real people and I have to pay homage to them, so I have to find every fact that I can. That’s what I did, I looked at everything documentary that I could find at that time, every book, I interviewed descendants from the survivors. Everything I could find, I did that. This is how we came to this play,” said Walter.
Walter said her goal is to get this play shown on Broadway and plans to debut another play at the end of the year.
