Carter is an eleventh-generation farmer, and the fifth generation to steward Carter Farms, a century-old family farm in Orange County, Virginia. In his book, Africulture, he blends history, culture, African-centered perspectives, and African American farm realities. He features inspiring stories as well as sobering facts tracking the severe decline in the number of African American farmers in this country over the last century.
