GRANBY, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) – A man has been charged with a crime after shooting a black bear that he says broke into an enclosure and killed several of his chickens.

Michael Gero, 39, called emergency dispatch on Friday, reporting that he had killed a bear that was attacking his livestock at his home in Granby, Connecticut.

Gero told investigators that he saw the bear eating a chicken in his yard before shooting it, and that he believed the bear killed his goats last month.

Gero was charged with using deadly force to kill a bear and is expected in court in Torrington on Oct. 9.
