As a Black woman, it was a comforting sight to see this phrase and the logo on the front page of DK each time I logged on. It gave me a feeling of safety, this was a place I could express myself on my issues it said. Today it’s gone, not because DK no longer supports the Black community but because choices were made when moving.
Thing is, that was why I joined DK, that single little phrase, that simple gesture that said “Hey, come here, it’s a safe place”. It’s a screenshot that was used in defense of racial attacks against me by others. Now I no longer have that to look forward to. But it’s removal has made me think.
I would have preferred additional show of supports, not just “the Black Community” but “here at DK we support Diversity Equity and Inclusion, subtle protection for all marginalized folks. Because in the end that’s what it really was; protection. I don’t know why it was removed instead of enlarging it to cover more folks. I was told it was because DK felt it had met its goals/commitments in that regard, I don’t get it? It really doesn’t make much sense to me?
I know I’ll still get support here when needed, but it’s just not the same feeling. Something feels amiss. Something feels wrong and I hope I’m just wrong. A sense of belonging, of comfort and warmth is gone.
While nothing has changed, everything has changed. In a world where more and more doors are being closed to minority groups, where businesses are removing DEI, where racism is on the rise, this feels like one more door being shut (no matter that it wasn’t the intent).
I will wait and see what this change brings with it, in reality. In the meantime I feel how I feel.

Daily Kos relies on small donations to make ends meet
Ad revenue can’t support Daily Kos operations—and it hasn’t been able to for more than a decade. Digital ad revenue has declined everywhere, especially for news organizations for whom it was once their lifeblood. Companies are spending less money on ads, and Amazon, Facebook and Google are gobbling up an ever-greater share of what remains. This has left almost nothing for places like Daily Kos. The only reason we’ve been able to survive is because of the support of readers like you. That’s why we’re asking: Can you take one minute right now to donate $5 or more to Daily Kos? It would mean so much to us.
