How South Africa is using solar to tackle power cuts | BBC News | BBC News

In South Africa, frequent power cuts is an issue that people have been battling with for 15 years.

For those who have the means, they have been able to go off grid, using expensive solar systems and alternative energy sources.

Now, local companies are providing pay-as-you-go backup power systems which allow others in less well-off areas to be able to do the same.

  1. And then? Are you guys serious? When people said "the western propaganda machine," I thought they were just angry but I see it is real. Push false narratives to push a political agenda.

  2. How are home solar systems costing you $16,000 in SA. Where are you buying them from. In Zambia the equivalent of $3000 gets you a decent solar system that powers all (just avoid the stove and geyser, otherwise all other power needs are met and wont need the grid.

  3. While the wealthy equip their private homes and businesses with renewable energy, their encourage the middle class and poor citizens to discourage their governments from investing in it for the benefit of all citizens. Hence the negative comments under every related video.

  4. This is where Caliornia would be if the state/local government and residences hadn't invested in solar, wind, and batteries. In Michigan, after being in weeklong power outages, my mom bought a gas generator with yearly and emergency service. Her in fire risk and forest lands, the power companies turn off the power if it's hot, and windy, or there is lightening. They recommend having solar./wind/batteries and/or gas (gasoline, natural gas, propane) generators. Sort of wonder if storing, transporting, pouring, connecting gas or lithium imporperly isn't another fire hazard…..

  5. Poor SA, expelled the whites and put in governor the most stupidity and corrupt party in the world, always speaking in fight against racism, but in fact it matter about mismaaegement. Going to copy Zimbabwe.

  6. Charlie Kirk would be calling for peace, restraint and forgiveness if he were alive. No retaliation (other than the jailing of the responsible of course) against the left or their figures. Christ is King and this man may have lost his life but he retained his soul.

  7. South Africa has gone over 140 consecutive days without load shedding, with only 26 hours of outages recorded between April 1 and October 2, 2025. This marks a dramatic turnaround from previous years, when rolling blackouts were a daily reality. The Solar users have helped this but now the government is planning to add Fixed monthy rates to these users although they are not needing to be connected to the grid anymore! So basically we are paying for the SUN in South Africa. Nothing is thought through in South Africa. We weree asked to install to relieve the grid but now its backfiring on us as Solar users because they are losing the earning potential from us. We are unable to sell it back to Eskom so we will sit with extra expenses after already forking out thousands for our Solar systems!
