Angola: Looting, Clashes, Vandalism Over Fuel Hike; Protests Escalate in Luanda | Firstpost Africa

Angola’s capital, Luanda, erupted in violence after taxi drivers launched a strike over rising fuel prices. The government recently raised the cost of subsidised gasoline from 300 to 400 kwanzas per litre, triggering widespread anger. What began as a protest quickly turned chaotic with looting, burning barricades, and clashes between demonstrators and police. Videos showed crowds confronting officers and chanting slogans against President Joao Lourenco. The Luanda provincial government condemned the violence, reporting attacks on public buses, private vehicles, and property. Protests have now continued for three straight weekends. Angola’s ruling MPLA party, in power since 1975, is under pressure as frustration over inflation and inequality builds across the country.

  1. 3:11 Image is not of Angola, the number plate on the car is not Angola number plate, and the type of petrol station as well, does not exist in Angola, boring lazy, sloppy news reporting, in this day and age it should be easy to have accurate and properly researched reporting…

  2. That's why our people from northern Namibia always buy oil from Angola coz it's cheaper than here in Namibia due to currency exchange rate, diesel here in Namibia is around 20.65 Namibia dollars, which is around 1.12 USD and around 1,134.39 Angolan Kwanzas… So Angolans will find it more expensive to buy fuel here in Namibia than in Angola at the moment.

  3. Are you ok up there? By referring to people coming out in herds, are you calling them animals? As a reporter, I am certain you know very well the right word you should have used (droves), do why did you say herds?????

  4. I guess Angola's president is a friend of the West? I remember Biden"s visit to Angola last year, a lot of ppl in Angola were hoping that the visit would change sth for the better. A couple of days later I read that Angola will cooperate with Volodimir Zelensky from Ukraine. Once you start cooperating with him it's never enough, he always wants money, weapons ecc 😂

  5. I am Angolan and I am here just to clarify some more things.
The country Angola has been ruled by the same group MPLA and during the last 50 years our country has suffered with a lot of corruption and misery, the president told us he would help us but he only lied, he killed more than 100 people in this 3 days, things that isn't normal. At our country we don't have the opportunity to speak out our ideas or disagree with the president because anything we say could lead us or our family to death. The protest was pacific but since they killed a child everyone start using aggressive force against the government.
At the last day of protest they killed many people that didn't do anything including a mother in front of her unique son.
Angola is in grief, and many are now against the president João Lourenço

  6. The minimum salary in Angola is a😅bout 40 dollars which is down to Cape Verde minimum salary a country that doesn't produce petroleum and diamonds like Angola and other rich countries, that's a shame and fail from MPLA (João Lourenço). This killer president assault the last election to become in power while the people don't voted him as president he put all army's on the street to avoid lose the power in 2022, Unita won the elections and the mídia don't talk about this

  7. Espero que o povo possa dar uma tareia ao João dos dólares do petróleo…uma tareia sim eles precisam e serem corridos dos tachos….o povo sofre e eles compram imóveis e carros de topo de gama pela Europa e Américas….porrada nos gajos.

  8. And how come the president of Angola is the chairman of AU but he is failing to organize the country we do not need democracy in Africa because it is promoting corruption and sponsor terrorism to benefit western countries France and USA democratic countries in Africa 98% are ditactors

MPLA fora.

  10. The Angolan protest over the fuel ⛽ price hike, isn't only due to the current price but also to the high cost of living, unemployment, corruption, bribe, extreme abuse of the human rights the country is extremely rich, but the people are extremely poor, that's why the citizens dashed off to the street to say enough!!

  11. I am Angolan and I witness the suffering of my people. We are tired of the MPLA political party. Everything it promised, it hasn't delivered even half of. There's so much hunger, prostitution, unemployment, social inequality between the poor and the rich, so much corruption, nepotism. We are tired. We just want to live in peace with a minimum wage that can support our needs. We are tired. It's a cry for help that we, the Angolan people, are crying out for.

  12. Typical of Africa. Uncivilized, dysfunctional, political corruption, violent, stone age.
Resistant to advancement in all factors of modern life.
Always blaming others for their mistakes and misfortunes.
Africa has had more opportunities handed to this backwards country only to squander these opportunities, throwing them on to the garbage dump that the locals seem to love.
    Such a shame.
