Burkina Faso: Junta Chief Traore Scraps Visa Fees for African Travellers | Firstpost Africa | N18G

In a move to foster greater regional integration and tourism, Burkina Faso’s junta-led government has waived visa fees for all African travellers. The country’s security minister announced the decision last week, following a cabinet meeting chaired by junta head Captain Ibrahim Traoré, a vocal proponent of pan-African unity. While visa fees have been abolished, African citizens must still complete an online application for approval. This initiative aligns with a broader trend among West African nations, including Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya, which have recently eased travel restrictions for African citizens. The move is seen as a strategic effort by the country to gain support and boost its economy following its exit from the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, along with Mali and Niger. The government, however, faces criticism for its handling of ongoing security challenges from armed groups, which control a significant portion of the country.
