Benin: Loyal Soldiers Thwart Coup Attempt, Rebel Troops Arrested | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Benin’s President Patrice Talon announced on Sunday (December 7) that the government had successfully foiled a coup attempt after a group of soldiers declared on state television that they had ousted President Patrice Talon. The “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR) justified its move by citing grievances over the deteriorating security situation in the north, neglect of fallen soldiers’ families, and unjust promotions. Loyal army forces, swiftly backed by air support and troops from neighbouring Nigeria, launched a counter-coup operation. President Talon later assured the nation that the situation was “completely under control.” The incident, marked by gunfire near the President’s residence in Cotonou, has deeply disturbed the populace, who fear the country could follow the path of instability seen in West African neighbors like Niger and Burkina Faso. The failed coup comes just months before the April 2026 presidential election, which marks the end of Talon’s second term.

  1. Nigeria air struck the coup plotters without senate approval. Meanwhile, hundreds of innocent Nigerians are are at the mercy of bandits while Tinubu looks away.

  2. 🇫🇷 🇫🇷 France-Afrique is Dead. Get out of the France CFA Trap. The legacy of Françafrique is a complex web of neocolonial influence, characterized by France maintaining deep political, economic, and military control over its former African colonies through personal networks, currency ties (CFA Franc), military interventions, and preferential business deals, fostering dependency, corruption, and stunted local development, though recent coups and anti-French sentiment signal a significant shift as African nations seek greater autonomy. France's influence in Africa is a result of its colonial past, which involved a violent struggle for independence and the establishment of a post-independence government heavily reliant on French support. This has led to continued French influence through economic partnerships, a long-standing security and governance relationship, and the entrenchment of neocolonial structures that prioritize French interests. France has maintained a strong security and governance relationship with its former colonies , providing civil and military cooperation. France has been involved in counter-insurgency efforts, including military operations, though these have been accompanied by violent repression. However, public sentiment has turned against France, fueled by a history of political and economic interference, and a growing desire for greater sovereignty. A "wave" of anti-French influence in Africa is rooted in historical grievances, particularly France's violent suppression of the independence movement, and contemporary issues like economic dependence. This sentiment manifests in protests, calls for reparations and accountability from France for colonial atrocities, and opposition to French economic and political ties, exacerbated by the ongoing Crisis which is partly a legacy of the post-colonial political structure. Recent coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger reflect deep-seated frustration with French influence, with these nations turning towards Russia and other partners, notes The Yale Review of International Studies. France is withdrawing military bases and attempting to rebrand its relationship, but the deep structural legacy of Françafrique continues to shape African politics and economies, says TRT World and YouTub. In essence, Françafrique's legacy is one where France extracted resources and maintained power post-independence, creating a system that enriched elites and France while hindering true African sovereignty, a system now facing significant backlash and transformation.

  3. Democracy isn't the only way to lead a nation. Yes, it helps some countries rise as it did help some countries down. many countries achieved goals with different system.
It doesn't matter what the system is; Communism, democracy , monarchy or what ever. Only Good leadership matters.
When we talked about democracy we are talking about politicians, with politicians i can't imagine a great future for my country.

  4. ECOWAS and AU need to stop the root of political coups in Africa, by stopping constitutional coups. When a so called democratically elected president bans opposition parties from democratic elections, and embarks on changing the presidential term forward to stay indefinitely in power. Do we have real democracy in Africa! Especially in all Francophone countries; under the political influence of France; the former colonizer. What France will tolerate in these Francophone countries, will never be tolerated in the European nations, of which France is a member. Think about it.

  5. Niageria is not any big brother for no Fucking Africa. Their president is a betrayal and the whole world is watching trust me anything go down in Bukena Faso will be a would war. Nigeria president will be the first person everybody will go for.
